We started our July 4th celebration early this year with fireworks on the 3rd. After going out for pizza and making a quick stop at Walgreen's for some cheap glow in the dark toys, we scoped out a prime firework viewing spot (with an equally prime exit strategy to enable us to get home at a decent time) and proceeded to wait. I brought plenty of snacks and in between card games the kids had fun running around in the field near our spot.
While Allie and Olivia made it through the display with no problem, Zach just couldn't stay awake. He conked out early in the show and when we woke him up (yes...the kid actually slept through the deafening finale...apparently his superpower is the ability to sleep ANYWHERE), telling him it was time to leave, he was frustrated because he said, "That was the shortest firework show ever!" Apparently, according to his account, he only saw four fireworks!
We knew the kids would be exhausted the next day. Even though the went to bed at 11:00 pm., they were all up by 6:30 am. Lovely.
We grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and brats at my parent's house for lunch and enjoyed playing with Fred some more. Also, Ben took Allie and Zach swimming at my parents' neighborhood pool while I stayed back so Olivia could rest.
There were a few tears, a lot of hyperactivity, and more than one instance of exhaustion-induced bad behavior, but we made it through the day and everyone was ready for bed by 7:30 pm.
It was a fun day and we are all looking forward to the long weekend to recover!
