We don't do a whole lot to celebrate the New Year, but we thought it would be fun to get out of the house together yesterday. We enjoyed lunch at Five Guys followed by perusing Trader Joe's for appetizers we could make for dinner. After stocking up on finger-sized food, we made our way to the movie theater to see Walking with Dinosaurs. Although it wasn't a great movie by Ben and my standard's, the kids loved it...and we loved the reclining chairs and free popcorn!
On the way home, Ben and I decided to stop and pick out our belated Christmas present to ourselves...a brand new mattress! Yay for no more aches and pains in the morning due to our lumpy ole' bed! We even got a personal tour of the mattress factory where they make the mattresses...the kids were actually thrilled (especially since they were absolutely NOT thrilled when we told them in the car we'd be making a stop to shop for a mattress).
When we got home, we all chipped in to make our appetizer dinner: pigs in a blanket, chicken nachos, BBQ meatballs, mini yogurt parfaits, and stuffed mushrooms...complete with sparkling apple cider in fancy schmancy glasses.
We spent dinner talking about all that has happened in 2013 and how much we have been blessed throughout this past year. Some favorite highlights included getting Finn, our trip to Disneyworld, Zach losing his first tooth (and then 3 more), Olivia learning to use the potty, Olivia getting a big girl bed, Allie graduating first grade, our new kitchen, our new basement...the list goes on and on! We then talked about some predictions for 2014 which included many that I know won't come to pass (No...we are absolutely NOT getting another puppy!), many that I'm sure will (Zach can't wait to start all day school as a first grader, Allie wants a Frozen-themed birthday party), and even more surprises along the way!
After dinner we watched New Year's firework celebrations from all around the world before heading to bed. Nope, we did not make it to midnight. In fact, I'm certain Ben and I were both fast asleep by 10:00 pm. Yes...we are that exciting.
This morning Ben surprised us with New Year's donuts!
Then, while Ben and the kids stayed home in their pjs to watch the Rose Parade, I headed out to run a few errands. The grocery store was practically empty this morning...so I was able to finish up quickly.
I've also been trying to catch up on a few things around the house before life resumes as normal tomorrow. Like meal planning, tidying up, blogging, and creating my new kitchen chalkboard for January:
So far, it looks like 2014 is going to be another fantastic year!
